Birger Sandzen
1871-1954
Birger Sandzen was born in the Swedish village of Blidsberg in 1871. Sandzen entered the Academy and College of Skara at age 10, where he continued his art training. In the winter of 1884, Sandzen moved to Paris, where he studied with Aman-Jean, a French symbolist painter and friend of pointillist George Seurat.
Sandzen joined the staff of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, in September of 1894. He produced most of his work during his time as a professor, and became well-known for his landscape work. In 1922, The Taos Society of Artists accepted Sandzen as an associate member.
Sandzen continued to teach and lecture in Colorado, Kansas and Missouri, remaining active until his death in 1954.
