Ava Marie Coriz
1948-2011
Ava Marie “Cool-Ca-Ya” Coriz was born in 1948, into the Santo Domingo Kewa Pueblo. She was a member of the Antelope Clan. Coriz carried on the Native American tradition of making jewelry, as she was taught by her father, Lupe Pena. She began working with various stones at the age of 14, and in 1969 she learned how to work with silver. She specialized in hand-strung, hand-ground beaded necklaces with quality stones and silver. Coriz won numerous awards at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque, and continued to create exceptional jewelry until her death in 2011.
