This August Nedra Matteucci Galleries reflects on the life story and artistic journey of Michael Naranjo; a sculptor whose incredible character exemplifies the essence of the American Spirit and serves as powerful reminder that any obstacle can be overcome.

Naranjo spent his formative years exploring the natural beauty of Northern New Mexico, in particular his tribal land of Santa Clara Pueblo. Early on Naranjo developed a love and respect for life and nature. He developed a strong sense of self, a desire to succeed, and as a young man he dedicated himself to achieving his childhood dream of becoming a sculptor.

For many others, that dream would have been quelled with the events that were soon to follow. In 1968 while serving in the US Army in Vietnam Michael was blinded by a grenade explosion. However, Michael’s unconquerable spirit, perseverance, and self-determination enabled him to focus his inner strength, to overcome great adversity, and achieve the realization of his dream.

Naranjo’s inspirational career spans over fifty years and has earned him an international reputation. His limited-edition bronze castings give thought to the reverence he holds for nature, animals, and relay stories unique to his culture. Naranjo’s sleek sculptures are in public and private collections around the world. His signature black patina is a reflection of his inner vision.

Meet Michael Naranjo at the gallery reception on Saturday, August 10, from 2 – 4 PM.
